Areas of Support

Social Responsibility

It has been a commitment of the company to maintain good relationship with the community, and shares back what it has to the public it serves.

As the company keeps growing, more emphasis is given to its social responsibility through its community outreach projects outlined every year, like monetary donations and other financial assistance to the helpless folks, and other civic responsibilities. To date, hundreds of thousands of pesos are given to those who plead for help involving urgent or emergency cases like hospitalization and medicine purchases for indigent Boholanos.

One big outreach project of the company is the prestigious Alturas Drum and Bugle Corps Showdown every anniversary celebration of Alturas Supermarket in the last week of November. More than 2 million pesos are spent in this event and the bulk of the gross proceeds will go directly to the beneficiaries, the “Tagbilaran-By-Nite” Foundation of the Bohol Chronicle Radio Corporation and “Sunshine Home”, an orphanage managed by the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and DSWD. The donations are given annually as a way of the company’s renewed commitment to help the less fortunate, particularly the street children.

With the desire to reach out more to the other sectors of the society, the company has its Foundation tasked to conduct more humanitarian services in the community by sharing its blessings to those bereft of the comforts of modern-day living, particularly the troubled youth, battered women and disabled children.

Every year, the Foundation always reaches out and extends helping hands to those in need, through its outlined outreach programs and projects, as part of the company’s thrust on social welfare and development.

Environment and Nature

Care for the environment and nature has been given utmost importance by the company as it always takes heed in whatever environmental concerns of the community.

One example is the Marcela Farms, Inc. (MFI) which, in response to the rising cost of energy and oil, invested in a wastewater treatment facility that better disposes pig manure and capture methane to generate electricity.

The MFI’s biogas plant is the first LANDBANK-financed project to be included in the Program of Activity for piggeries under the Methane Recovery from Waste Project registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In other areas of concern for the environment, the company always responds to the rehabilitation plan of mine-out areas, as required by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The company makes it sure that tree seedlings are planted on all abandoned quarry sites in the farms. With the rehabilitation, this will help transform the idle lands into a virtual man-made forest which could help man sustain a living, or even save lives in other capacities.

The company is also actively participating in the tree planting projects of the government, through the coordination of the Local Government Units (LGUs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). When it comes to involvement in the environmental protection, the company always lends a helping hand to whatever programs and projects initiated or implemented by the government.

Conflict and Disaster Aid

The company has been noted for its unwavering support and commitment in the protection of life and properties, especially in the fight against fires.

The Alturas Fire Brigade, a volunteer group of dynamic firefighters, is always ready with its 5 fire trucks which can hold a total capacity of 74 tons (17,107 gallons) of water during emergency calls. To boost their firefighting capabilities, members of the fire brigade are attending different seminars, symposia, and lectures conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and frequently participate in rigid fire drills in order to equip themselves with the new skills for their risky tasks, and hone their fire fighting prowess.

The BFP always cites the Alturas Fire Brigade as one of the best in the region, especially its members for their volunteerism during times of calamity. It also received the numerous praises and accolades from other organizations for its quick emergency response and total dedication in the campaign and fight against the outbreak of fires.

Every month of March, the company actively joins the nationwide observance of Fire Prevention Month, where it helps contribute to the promotion of public awareness and consciousness on the various aspects of fire safety and prevention.

When it comes to disaster preparedness, the company, through its Safety and Security Department (SSD), is always ready to respond to any emergency calls in the event of any disasters, just to makes sure the customers and employees are safe. Earthquake and fire drills are regular fixtures in the company’s safety and security procedures.
